With the US box office currently dominated by micro-budgeted indie horror films like Backrooms and Obsession, Hollywood executives are increasingly anxious about the viability of mass-appeal, “four-quadrant” tentpoles in bloated, long-running franchises.
This summer will certainly prove telling, as a familiar line-up of superheroes, sequels and reboots jostles for attention amid a slate of wildly unpredictable smaller fare.

1. Supergirl
Following her brief introduction in 2025’s excellent Superman reboot, the Man of Tomorrow’s younger cousin Kara Zor-El lands her own big-screen adventure, with House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock reprising the role.
