The most surprising hit of 2026 has now surpassed a barrier that makes its success all the more shocking by industry standards. Although the top spots on the list of highest-grossing movies of the year are still occupied by familiar IPs, sequels, and other franchise giants, this small independent thriller proves that high budgets don’t always translate into success. Perhaps Hollywood should be “obsessed” with case studies such as this one to learn a thing or two about box office success in today’s cinema landscape.
The movie in question is, of course, Obsession, the supernatural horror thriller that has taken the world by storm since its debut on May 15. The $750,000 film has been smashing records, and its latest box office milestone is likely unprecedented for a production of its size. Per Box Office Mojo, it has now broken the $297 million barrier, outgrossing nearly 400 times its production budget. It is also important to highlight that its international theatrical run has yet to begin in some territories, meaning that figure is only going to go up.
‘Obsession’ Enters the Pantheon of Box Office Indie Horror Darlings
The “romantic” horror thriller is now part of a select group of independent productions that have shaken the Hollywood box office. Its peers include major breakouts like Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project, which made hundreds of millions from a modest budget of less than $1 million. Obsession is also another great example of how horror can be much more profitable than other genres.
The other major case study of 2026 is Backrooms, Kane Parsons’ Hollywood adaptation of the viral internet phenomenon he created when he was a teenager. The film has made over $262 million against a $10 million production budget, and it has become the other horror breakout of the year. Curiously, both films are from content creators who were given a chance to make a feature film, and they have proved that they have what it takes to deliver more than a few scares.
Could ‘Obsession’ Get a Sequel?
Amid the craze for Obsession, director Curry Barker has had to address the almost obligatory topic of a sequel. After all, that’s the automatic conclusion Hollywood reaches after a hit, regardless of the actual potential for a follow-up. Sometimes sequels work, but more often they result from commercial ambition and don’t merit a story-driven continuation.
Barker has stated that he has an idea for Obsession 2. “I obviously have a couple more things that I’m excited about next, but I do see Obsession 2,” the director said recently. “Or even what really is exciting to me is maybe an anthology, like a one-hour episode. Each episode is a different wish that goes completely off the rails.” But it’s also important that he doesn’t immediately “want to go straight into Obsession 2.” Recently, it was reported that his next movie, Anything But Ghosts, takes place in the same universe as the 2026 horror hit, but it is not a sequel.
