Nobody else is getting much room to breathe right now. Spider-Man: Brand New Day just keeps going, and Brand New Day dominating the competition for a second straight week is quickly becoming the defining story of the summer box office.
A few new releases tried to make noise this weekend. They didn’t get very far. According to Variety, here’s how the domestic Top 5 shapes up through Sunday.
Spider-Man Brand New Day box office: $143 million in week two
The debate about whether Brand New Day is a hit ended sometime last weekend. The conversation now is how high it can actually go.
Sony and Marvel’s blockbuster pulled in an estimated $43 million on Friday alone from 4,487 North American theaters. The projected second weekend total: $143 million. That’s a drop of roughly 60 percent from opening weekend, but here’s what matters. The movie opened to a record $360 million. A 60 percent decline from that number still leaves Spider-Man collecting more in week two than most blockbusters earn in their entire opening frame.
By Sunday, Brand New Day should reach around $653 million domestically. It already crossed $1 billion worldwide. Six days. That’s how long it took.

Spider-Man Brand New Day second weekend: The Odyssey stays strong at No. 2
Christopher Nolan is not going away quietly.
The Odyssey is projecting another $30.5 million in its fourth weekend, which is a genuinely impressive hold for a film that has already been filling theaters for weeks. Friday brought in $8.8 million, and the domestic total should land around $460 million by Sunday. With Brand New Day dominating the weekend box office, a drop of only 40 percent says a lot about Nolan’s film and the loyal audience it has built.
One Night Only box office: newcomer debuts at No. 3
The weekend’s top new entry lands in a very distant third.
One Night Only stars Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro in a romantic comedy about two hopeless romantics who meet during the one night each year when singles are legally permitted to have sex. That’s a premise. Friday brought in $2.8 million from just over 3,000 theaters, with the weekend projected at around $6 million.
Modest by the standards of what’s sitting above it, but One Night Only still outran the weekend’s other newcomers.
The Odyssey box office: Super Troopers 3 opens at No. 4
The Broken Lizard crew is back. The crowds, not so much.
Super Troopers 3 opened Friday to around $1.7 million and is looking at roughly $3.9 million for the weekend. The unconventional highway patrol officers are back doing what they do, which is mostly making terrible decisions in very funny ways. The third film lands in fourth place, and while Searchlight has another entry in the long running series, the opening suggests nostalgia alone wasn’t quite enough to drive people to the multiplex.
Weekend box office results: Toy Story 5 won’t leave the Top 5
Woody, Buzz and the crew are still here.
Toy Story 5 is in its eighth weekend and still projected to add $4.1 million to its domestic run, which should push the Pixar sequel to around $470.5 million in North America by Sunday. Nearly two months in theaters while new releases keep dropping around it. That’s a run worth noticing.
But the biggest story is still Spider-Man.
With Brand New Day dominating the weekend box office, the film came into its second frame with nothing left to prove. Instead of simply riding that historic opening, it is stacking another enormous weekend and pulling further away from everything else in theaters right now. For the rest of Hollywood, catching Spider-Man this summer may be a lot easier said than done.
