Dustin Hoffman has spent nearly six decades bringing unforgettable characters to the big screen — and today, the two-time Academy Award winner celebrates his 89th birthday.
Born on Aug. 8, 1937, in Los Angeles, Hoffman became one of Hollywood’s most influential actors after his breakout role as Benjamin Braddock in the 1967 classic The Graduate. The film transformed the then-30-year-old actor into an unlikely leading man and helped redefine what a movie star could look like. According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the performance earned Hoffman his first Oscar nomination.
Over the years, Hoffman built one of the most acclaimed filmographies in Hollywood history. He earned Academy Awards for Best Actor for Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and Rain Man (1988), while also receiving Oscar nominations for Midnight Cowboy, Lenny, Tootsie, Wag the Dog and Finding Neverland. According to the Academy, his career has earned him eight Oscar nominations in total.

Beyond awards recognition, Hoffman starred in a string of beloved films that have remained audience favorites for generations, including All the President’s Men, Marathon Man, Hook, Little Big Man and Meet the Fockers. According to IMDb, he has appeared in more than 100 film and television projects throughout his career.
In addition to his acting honors, Hoffman received the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1999 and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2012, recognizing his lasting impact on American cinema.
