The Latin music world is mourning the loss of one of its most recognisable voices, as news emerges of the passing of Dominican singer Alex Bueno. Known for his long-standing influence in Merengue and Bachata, the artist’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief from fans and the wider music community.

Bueno passed away at the age of 62 in New York City on June 18 at 9:43 am Eastern Standard Time, according to an official statement shared on his Instagram account. The announcement confirmed that the singer had been battling cancer for several years and had been receiving treatment in the United States since September 2025.

The Instagram post describing his passing highlighted the impact of his life and work, stating in Spanish: “His passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the world of the arts and in the hearts of all who had the honor of knowing him and admiring his musical work.”

In the days leading up to his death, updates from his official account had been closely followed by fans, especially as reports circulated in Dominican media about a possible decline in his health.

A statement shared on June 17 addressed those concerns and provided an update on his medical condition. It noted that the singer had recently undergone surgery in the United States and was initially showing signs of recovery.

According to the post, his condition changed significantly in the weeks before his passing. “His progress was positive until three weeks ago, when he experienced a significant drop in sodium levels and blood pressure, leading to severe physical decline and complications in his clinical condition,” the statement read. It further added, “The artist is currently in the intensive care unit receiving specialized medical care (he is not intubated),”

Bueno’s health challenges had been ongoing since he was diagnosed with a “small” brain tumour in September 2025. Following the diagnosis, he travelled to the United States for surgery, which was initially described as successful and without major complications.

However, his recovery journey soon became more complex. Medical updates shared via his social media indicated that cancer cells were later detected in the lesion, requiring immediate treatment. While early responses to treatment were encouraging and showed no neurological aftereffects, his condition became increasingly unstable after the disease spread to other parts of his body.

At the time, the singer chose to keep his recovery process private. The post noted that “Exercising his right to privacy, Alex chose to keep this new stage of his recovery strictly private, remaining convinced and optimistic that he would overcome this diagnosis as well,”

Despite moments of improvement, his health continued to fluctuate, ultimately leading to critical complications that required intensive care in the final weeks.

Beyond his health struggles, Alex Bueno leaves behind a significant musical legacy. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Dominican Merengue and Bachata, with a career spanning decades.

He began his journey in music performing with Orquesta de Fernando Villalona before going on to establish himself independently. He later co-founded La Orquesta Coco Band, further strengthening his presence in the industry.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Bueno fronted Alex Bueno y la Orquesta Supreme, releasing internationally acclaimed records and popular tracks such as ‘Que Vuelva’ and ‘Jardinera,’ which remain widely celebrated in Latin music circles today.
