Hollywood is a terrifying place. It’s not just the ruthless calibration of who’s on top and who’s not, updated constantly, that affects everyone from the biggest movie star to the dog walker. It’s that the whole place is built on a pitch. From the palm tree-lined streets to the statuette-lined mantels, it’s all the stuff of dreams — and it can disappear just as easily as it was imagined.

What does it feel like, then, for the human beings who live in a town where anyone’s life can change in a split second? There’s an infuriating impatience from those at the bottom and an existential dread among those at the top. No one is safe. No position is forever, no parking spot ever really secure. It is in this chaotic daily wash cycle that some of the best stories live — not just about the stars who give Tinseltown its glitter, but also about the assistants, cleaners, cooks, florists and wait staff who keep the whole sprawling labyrinth of a city running.

Here are some of my favorite Hollywood thrillers — from the down and dirty to the deliciously dishy, and every flavor in between.
